Hi, I've been wondering for a while which synth makes the cool percussive synth sound in Humanoid invasion by LD like you hear at 1:43-1:56 and 0:41-0:53
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5D11noGg0E
According to this interview http://www.spacesoundrecords.com/artists_en_0.html with Michiel he used only a JX-10, Juno 60 and a Linn Drum on this record. I own a Juno 60 and a JX 8P (which is almost the same as a JX-10) and I can't recreate the sound.
Anybody has any idéas? |

Hi! That sound is from the JX-10, it seems to be a variation on the patch "Obese Fifths".
Though it's on the JX-10 I think you can recreate it on the jx8p, but you'll have to layer it or use unison mode or whatever (I'm not quite familiar with the JX8P, sorry).
Upper Tone
DCO 1
Range: 8'
Wave: Saw
DCO 2
Range: 8'
Wave: Saw
Fine tune: +10
XMOD: OFF
Filter
Cutoff: 41
Res: 00
ENV: 76
A: 17
D: 50
S: 88
R: 42
DCA
A: 27
D: 77
S: 00
R: 31
Lower Tone
u]DCO 1[/u]
Range: 2'
Wave: Square
DCO 2
Range: 4'
Wave: Square
Fine tune: +7
XMOD: XMOD
Filter
Cutoff: 48
Res: 00
ENV: 99
A: 00
D: 00
S: 00
R: 44
DCA
A: 00
D: 34
S: 00
R: 39
After you program this, set the lower tone an octave higher than the upper tone.
then you'll get this: testjx10.mp3 |

| AWESOME!!! Thanks! That sounds exactly like it in your mp3 file! And you showed me how to program it! Is this my lucky day or what! Hopefully I'll get my JX 8P to sound like this otherwise I'd be seriously contemplating buying a JX-10. |

| Noooo! It doesn't sound even remotely close. But the parameters on the JX 8P seems to be quite different. Darn! Now I have to get a JX-10. |

| Another question: Is there any posibility that there are some parameters you have forgot to mention in your description how to make the sound? The JX 8P has quite a few more than the ones you brought up here so maybe that's why I can't get the correct sound...? But I don't know exactly how the JX 10 works. I have only heard it is supposed to be two JX 8P in one synth and that the LFO is somewhat different. |

When I get back home on thursday or friday, I'll see what I can do.
I'm not sure if I can extract any .fxp or a sysex file out of the JX-10 because the MIDI capability (compared to other synths of the time) are very very poor and I think you have to have an M16C or a M64C memory card in the slot in order to transmit or receive data from the computer. It was one of the biggest problems that I ran into when writing Contact- I wanted to save the stab patch into the computer as a sysex file, but I couldn't... so I resorted to writing down the parameters in a notebook.
If you're thinking of getting a JX-10, maybe think about getting the rackmount version of it, the MKS-70. It has better MIDI so you can edit it easily through the computer. Even though the JX-10 is probably the best-sounding synth that I have, it is complete hell to program, which is why I stopped using it.
[another reason why I don't use it is because every 8th key starting from B-4 onwards doesn't work, and I think I need to replace a chorus chip because only certain keys are playing in chorus while others aren't. It's a beautiful sounding machine and I wanna fix it, but I don't know how...] |

If you are buying an MKS-70 I encourage you to find one with the newest firmware 1.08. Editing layer tones is cumbersome with older firmwares. I have MKS70 with 1.04 installed and I can only edit tone A via sysex. Not cool. _________________ faroutmusic.net | soundcloud.com/dreamtime-music |
