Haven't listened, as using the tiny net-book downstairs to type this... so pointless trying get an idea on a mix with the piss-poor speakers on this thing. Ironically though, if you don't have access to things as a pair of house-price type speakers (B&W Nautilus anyone?).... After you've done with your mix, burn a copy onto a basic CD and listen to it on a really good stereo, a really average one (via TV through a DVD player, without the home cinema unit bit on maybe) and an utter pile of turd of a stereo that makes even Trevor Horn's production sound ham-fisted and poor...
If it sounds great on the turd... you're doing something very right, if it sounds turd on the great... then something is not well in the mix.
For a more in depth reply(warning may be TL;DR for many)... learning about how sound behaves when it's recorded is a BIG BIG learning curve, it is not the same as simply listening to sounds...The one thing to consider is compression, a very dark art. Learning when to compress a loop, kick drum or even a synth pad is only slightly less dificult than learning when NOT to compress something in the audio spectrum. Compression can control those bass tones, or those slicing snare drums... it can also crush all the dynamics out of a mix and render an emotive performance listless and dead. Th real kicker is there's no definitive "right" way to do it... something may sound really great to you, may sound like a crushed turd to someone else. EQ is another matter, everyone who first gets behind a desk with a hal decent EQ section on it falls into the same trap... that is, for bassy things, turn up bass for high end things, turn up the top and mid range... COMPLETELY FORGETTING that killing of bits of the EQ that aren't going to add anything "useful" is a much, much better option.
All of these things will come in time, some things will be learned others are learned from others... the one thing it's going to take is time, my mixes sound way better than they did 10 years ago. Some of that can be attributed to equipment costs getting less and less for what you get (full analogue physical synths for less that $50...? they exist), but most of it is due to a learning curve that I doubt there will ever be a pinnacle of (unless I become Trevor Horn)... So keep at it, learn form your mistakes and if you can... learn from other people's...
