What's new to you will depend on when you were last there, but here are my discoveries:
Spacevision has two new songs, "Lost in Humanity" and "Technological Mentality". The second is listed as being "Old Skool", but it sounds quite like spacesynth to me.
Ladeon (I think he's Fonzie here) has posted 3 songs, "Forces", and older one called "Travelling in the Night", and a version of "Ancient Ruins of Jeppis" that has been remastered by Maciej.
The most surprising one I think would have to be that Sakke posted the full version of "Lonely Summer", which won the second SS.de contest, on his Rayden site. Guess the CD is taking too long.... _________________ "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana." ~ Groucho Marx |

...Whoa, Mark, you just made my night... I've been waiting for "Twilight Imperium" since I first heard a clip in some topic here about compression... so very punchy and energetic, and the conclusion is cool, too. "Fire Fusion" is also a fine piece of work, it's very rich and the stabs especially have a certain... drama? power? I also like the bell arpeggio.
Thank you!! _________________ "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana." ~ Groucho Marx |

I think I will release my 1st contest song, Afterburner too maybe this weekend. Perhaps I'll do some remixing on it first, if I'm not feeling too lazy.
And yeah, the contest CDs are taking way too long. This isn't fair for the artists. |

Fire fusion is a awesome song. This is probably the best song that I have heard from Mark Vera so far. The brassvoice sounds warm and aggressive and give the chords a good attitude. The vocoder material has top quality and works really good together with the rest of the song. Probably he has read ss.net's Vocoder tutorial before he made it
The only thing that I can comment in this song is the orchestra hits around position 02'40-02'50 that does fit perfectly to the rest of the song. Well, it is just a minor comment. Both thumbs up ! |

Yesss... it's an influx of high-quality spacesynth... "Afterburner", like pretty much all the Electron tunes, has really good atmosphere and nice melodies. The stab sequence and arpeggio is somewhat unique, and I like the filter sweep at the very beginning (and in the middle). I also like the--I'm not sure what it's called--whatever the argpeggio does around 2:32.
"Lonely Summer"... very strong and steady but complex rhythm bolstered by that snare, the bass, and arpeggio. Again, superb atmostphere (especially the pads) and melodies, especially with arranging them so that when one comes up after a "hiatus" it's familiar but fresh (I think "Afterburner" does this, too). Very nice vocoders that work well by themselves and then combine with other harmonies to make the song even better. I like the brass-like lead and and saw lead... they have a certain cutting edge.
When is that album coming out?
I think I owe a bit more to "Twilight Imperium"... the bassline is fantastic. The regular 16th-note one is very bouncy, and the part that plays over it towards the beginning enhances its... bass-iness? and helps build up for the main melody, which is uber-catchy. The part around 3:45 with the stabs playing behind the melody is great, and also near the end with the melodies playing over each other. Favorite instruments in this would have to be the sharp snare and the sound that precedes the the arrival of the drums at the beginning (the one that goes "uuuuuuuooaaiiiiit" ). My only complaint would be that a couple of the melodies and the stab sequence are kind of similar, which is good for continuity, but it makes the song wear out faster after multiple listens.
I don't remember if I've said this or not... the intro to "Fire Fusion" sounds almost exactly like the intro to the SS remix of C-4's "San Diego". Really like the melody around 4:50... it's sort of the final drive of the song, and it's backed up by the stabs and bells and all that other good stuff in the background, of which there seems to be quite a lot (additions to drum beat, sound effects, the sawtooth that works with the bells), which is probably part of what makes the song so good.
...Have I used enough complimentary adjectives yet? _________________ "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana." ~ Groucho Marx |

Thanks all that Bassline is backed up with one softsynth. I like to layer juno occasionally with other basslines to give the all-standard juno a bit more variation. You notice the same thing in the Protocosm song as well.
The song itself is quite straight forward and made in one evening, so it may lack a bit more melody variation, although I like it in such compact way. Probably a bit inspiration from some Dreamtime song and Area 51 Imminent Attack. I recall I made San Diego remix and Twilight Imperium around the same time, so it might why they sound a bit similar. What comes to song structure I've noticed I like to make songs sort of progressive towards the end so that the latter part has some new stuff and not just repeated. Such as the 3:45 in Twilight Imperium is one time sequence (maybe makes it more interesting part as you hear it only once). Fire Fusion has that Star Orion style end climax.
That filter sweep (the "uuuuoaaiiit" sound) is from AN1x if you're interested. |
