JD800/JD990 is interesting. A few up for sale at the moment, so i guess i will buy one of those I Just bought a Oberheim Matrix-1000 and a second Juno-106 as well. The 106 was so cheap that i had to pick it up. So i guess i have a Juno-106 for sale or for trade .... |

I can recommend a Korg DW 8000. It costs about 200-300 euro. You can find lots of good sounds on the net for download. I use it on almost every track I compose. It sounds fabolous!
Here is an example what it sounds like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzpBVJHE264 |

Yes!! DW-8000/EX-8000 is a super synth!
2 LauriT:
Yes, Moog is good, but... For this money (3000$) it is really bad synth... Nothing special and nothing to compare with classic Model D... Little Fatty sounds different and better: more punch in the sound. |

So the DW/EX-8000 sound's isn't covered by the sounds in Legacy Pack..? I know the synth itself isn't coverd...
Guess i have to check it out. But my hardware/sw list start to get quite full now Soon time to upload some pictures of my small and overstuffed home studio....
The HW list so far:
2X Roland Juno-106 (Both with voice coating off and fully retuned and serviced) 1 probably for sale.
Roland JX-10 with PG-800, waiting for Colin Fraser mod/ROM replacment. Midi control is ****...
Roland MKS-70 (Rackmount JX-10 with better midi control)
Roland D-110 with 4 cards.
Roland JD-990 with vintage board installed. Thx for the tip Lauri! This one sounds GREAT!
Roland JX-305
Oberheim Matrix-1000
Casio CZ-1000 (Same as CS-101)
M-audio FW1814 soundcard with Behringer ADAT/preamp for totally 8 stereo line inputs wich are controllable in DAW.
Software Instruments: A LOT
Guess i once started in the wrong end. Started with some VSTi's but didn't fin them inspiring and i ended up making "Space inspired" modern dance/trance/eurotrash music instead. After a lot of good tips from you guys i started to collect more HW and i find the old HW like Juno/JX/JD-990 more inspiring and leading me the right way, and then fill up with some VST's. I know both HW and VST can do the job but this is the way that works best for me
The list is almost complete...well by second thought. It newer will be.. I found out that i really like to collect old synths so will still be watching ebay for good bargains.
Ebay search:
Roland MKS-50/Juno Alpha 2
Roland D-50/550
and now Korg DW/EX-8000
(Yamaha DX series is nice covered by FM7/
And still open for suggestions from you great guys!
[Edit] Forgot the Matrix-1000

Please, don't make a big mistake... Old FM synths does not covered by FM7/8.
I have DX7 IIFD, TX81Z, DX21. And I have FM8. Hardware synths is different. And better than FM8. Old FM synth from yamaha have a PUNCHY bass, PUNCHY leads, dirty "comic effects" I tried to use bit crushers (Logic BitCrusher and D16 Decimort), distortions, filters, EQ.... But it cannot make a REAL feeling of REAL DX/TX in a mix.
Low resolution DAC - very important part of sounds from 1980's!!! It's very hard to emulate. FM8 can't help.... Unfortunately, you can't simulate Emu EII or DX7 in software. Never...
And real DX/TX stands right in a mix. Better than thin and very clear FM8.
For example, Yamaha DX21 basses. 44kHz/24 Bit .wav file:

Chorus is not an external effect, it's from DX21 (real analog chorus).
I wish you all the best and do not make the wrong choice! |

I agree! I have the DX7IIFD and the TX81Z and have tried FM8 before... The DX and the TX sound more pleasing to the ear, and FM8 strikes me as a bit too clean. Also I think that the DX7II line of synths sound somewhat cleaner than the original DX7 and anything in the 4-operator line (dx21,27,100 etc).
The TX81Z has a heavy and extremely "present" sound, so I pretty much use it for bass + leads nowadays instead of the DX7IIFD (which I now use for plucky/metallic/pad/other background sounds) |

Keep in mind that some people don't necessarily need an exact emulation. They simply need good sounding FM synth. I don't suppose it's a mistake - it's a choice. Choice of comfort over "exact emulation". |

Yes! You are right! Krizz, I understand what you mean. FM8 is a super synth for interesting rhythmic patterns, gated pads, and for "thin" sounds... Very user frendly...
But if authentic sound (warm, punchy, full of live) of 1980's is really needed - then it's choice between masturbation and real woman.
I can play on one timbre from DX7 many hours... And it's not boring! It's fun! But every sound from virtual emulation (FM8 or FM7) bored very quickly... Why? Answer - unique artifacts in the sound (low resolution DAC, specific noise e.t.c.) |
