I've been thinking to replace my OS HD with an SSD disk. Have you guys any experiences and is there any good reason not to get one? I remember Staffan at least had a positive experience.

It's only been a positive experience for me. Be careful about what disk you buy though because some have (at least historically) had problems. Google is your friend =)

I bought Samsung 830 128GB SSD lately, but to be honest haven't tested it in music production very extensively yet. It's fantastically fast, so it seems to be an excellent choice when working with lot of samples and wav tracks, but I don't work with samples that much, it's hard to me to tell how good it performs. It might show its powers when I'll be doing final mixing of album tracks.
I discourage to purchase SSDs with SandForce controller, they are known to be problematic. Go into Marvell's or Samsung's, so Samsung 830 or Crucial M4. The latter one is a little older and slightly slower, but also cheaper than Samsung and still very good choice.

I was actually thinking of getting a Samsung 830 because it has received good reviews.

Did you guys do a clean Windows install or migrated an existing one to the SSD? I hate the idea of reinstalling all my software but it seems that it's generally recommended to do a clean installation.

I'm hoping SSD to improve general responsiveness of Windows and make plugins load faster.

I got it with the new computer so it was a clean install.

I've been working on XP until I bought SSD, so it was a clean install of Win7. But if you're on Win7 already, it's worth a try to migrate.

As always, make sure you have backup plan also. SSD disks have tendency to be lost forever if broken. You cannot really use the traditional software to recover files due the different way of storing data. Not sure about the todays SSD's if they are generally good, but as always the more expensive (such as Intel ones) use better control chips which make the disk more usable as system disk when there are more random small writes and reads instead of large file writes and reads (one way of fooling the test results). Some cheaper control chips in the disks choke when lots of small random writes are coming in, thus the disk becomes slow after a while if the hardware doesn't handle this right.
