I hadn't realized until just recently that there's an enthusiastic music scene making 80's revival synth music. It has many names: some call it dreamwave or synthwave, others outrun electro or new retrowave.

Anyway - this music takes influences from 80's science fiction, neon colors, video games, horror movies, Miami, sport cars etc. Some of the tracks are slow horror soundtracks and some are pure disco with vocals. It feels that there's quite a bit of variety eventhough the music is strongly 80s influenced.

Kavinsky's soundtrack for the recent movie Drive features this type of music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MV_3Dpw-BRY
Also, the new video game Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon has a bloody good soundtrack composed by Power Glove.

Go to http://www.newretrowave.com/ and listen to the radio to get an idea. You may not like all of it but I think spacesynth community should get in touch with that scene - so many 80s fans there.

Also, Synthetix Music at Facebook seems like a good group to get the latest news. Some album covers and general inspiration here: http://www.sbjkt.com/

Any people here familiar with these artists? I think some of the music is really good and captures the essence of 80s.

I really love Drive soundtrack. Kavinsky's "Nightcall" was an instant ass-kicker.

To keep the topic going I'd also recommend Kris Menace or Michael Cassette.

Wow, I'm so excited! Searched whole nets for modern "New Wave" music and found less than expected. Thanks for pointing out : )

Nice track i found few months ago:

I haven't explored much there but it could be better to hear from those artists more "80s guitars" and alto sax solos not just synths.

Some funny and cool 80s visuals that inspire these new synthwave musicians:

Yes Lauri, you're right. That style has really expanded out and generated many new acts. They all have in common trueness to the 80s and the cover arts are sooo 80s! It's more laidback than typical spacesynth. I have the Kavinsky "Outrun" in hard back cd, and the sleeve features a typical trip to an open air cinema among other 80s stuff...
I recommend checking the following acts of the same family as well;

FM Attack http://open.spotify.com/album/50Tkeho3kdUHcB2D9gyWT9

Harlem nights http://open.spotify.com/album/6TbmOCU2GrNiyQqGt8P5Ki

Miami Nights 1984 http://open.spotify.com/album/1xl2oh7njuwSneP6tLfdvN

Mitch Murder http://open.spotify.com/album/1ln0cipwqohGR62gIBgpBM

Tesla Boy http://open.spotify.com/album/0zeAQUuXLs3lddmqf66908

Finally, this pearl from Sally Shapiro which incapsulates this whole new cool style; http://open.spotify.com/track/3QCFFgSVrWKNsUBP8IENTl

I also discovered these artists some while ago and am getting lots of inspiration since my music was never pure spacesynth anyway.

C-60 is good synthwave stuff: http://youtu.be/IRNSdpew88E

Like in every genre the quality varies. But I'm surprised by the number of artists. Seems that the 80s is, err, hip now. Heh, I still cant get over some of that new retroart. Some of the covers are so spot on.

Pål recommended this as well and I gotta agree that Turbulence by Miami Nights 1984 is good.: http://miaminights1984.bandcamp.com/album/turbulence
