look like i can boost up level to 9-10db on limiter and the track still sound nice enough, heh! (i do this...just for my C7 Razz)

just try this out: open whatever sound editor. Convert any those latest pop songs bit depth to 8 bit and then listen and compare to that unchanged 16bit or 24bit version.
Do You notice any difference? The only moments where is perhaps some quantizing noise, is on fade-in and fade-outs.

Next, take some radio stream.
Record some minutes. Convert just for fun that to 8bit. Compare to original.
I guess You hear almost no difference, as they usually have highly compressed sound.

Next thing: add some hiss to all these tracks above which is on the level of -45dB. Do you hear it in the music? Wink

So, what is the point nowadays for those 16-bit and 24-bit soundcards >96dB dynamic range? Very Happy
My point is that in loudness war they have squeezed out dynamics so much that even those antique 8 bit soundcards are enough for listening the music which dynamic range is just 56dB !

You can see the mastering this way:

Mixing is balancing the tracks in the tune,
Mastering is balancing the tunes on the album.

If it is properly mixed then well, the only thing You may do with particular tune is to trim the silence in the beginning and end.
All those extra enhancements during mastering chain _may_ add ehancements, but those are subtle. Mastering process
is always for very subtle changes. However You can screw up badly the whole tune if not knowing what You are doing. So it is better to leave it alone.

So, it is better to have mastering as a process to match the tunes to each other on the album.

If something is wrong with particular tune, then it is NOT fixed during mastering later, but the proper action is to go step back -- so, mixing the tracks again.

after mixing is complete, just to check that You dont have subaudible rumble in Your tune, and normalize volume to 0 dB would be enough. Perhaps just a slight limiting You may do, bringing down the highest peaks in the tune if they vary 2..3 dB from other peaks, but thats unnecessary if it is all VST based production.

well, even that is not necessary. the built in limiter is ok, in these software pieces. Also for extern editor, CoolEdit/wavelab/AdobeAudition is more appropriate.
