When it comes to horror movies, "The grudge" hit me pretty hard....although "Buffy" is playing main character, the japanese children and especially the sound of them, sent perfect shivers down my spine....as often with sequels The Grudge 2 was a big disappointment, still the original is my recommendation here.

I can recommend "Juno" - and not just because of the name. Great drama/comedy that just recently came out. Well written, good acting and light to watch.

OK... I don't really know that much about horror movies, but I'll recommend a few in the comedy department:

"Blazing Saddles" - A satirical western by Mel Brooks and Richard Prior about a black sheriff who comes to save a Western town from the provincial governor. A little coarse and not politically correct, but hilarious. Clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiTKIbR69ss

"The Princess Bride" - Typical fantasy and love story, but with humor throughout the whole thing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-8kc3-VG4g

"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" - Cult classic. About King Arthur and some knights seeking the Holy Grail. Full of bizarre, British humor. Holy Hand Grenade clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOrgLj9lOwk&NR=1

Yeah, dialogues in Lynch movies are outstanding. Let me remind the most creepy dialogue I've ever heard ("Lost Highway"):

...
So typical to memorable dialogues in Lynch movies is that they are spoken slowly, very distinct way, to increase the creepyness. It really works.

That is friggin' creepy... I think one thing that contributes to that is the fact that the strange guy doesn't stop smiling. And the white make-up, too.

Watched [REC] too. That was rather scary. Really intense, especially the last scene was very creepy. One of the best horror movies I've seen in the last few years.

Some short reviews of movies I've seen recently (some slight spoilers, but shouldn't spoil the movie actually):

Taken - I was told how good this movie is, so I was expecting a nice cup of action. The movie turned to be quite ok, but if I was into putting shortly what this picture is about, it would be: "hey, american teenagers, stay away from europe - it's a land of barbarians, who only await you on the terminal to hijack you, rape you and sell you to another european barbarian. Europe is barbarian! You had european friends? Don't trust them, they are barbarians, too, so they will betray you for sure!". While watching it, I had a resemblance of Rocky 4 - the great american hero of great, good country of America, kicks ass of bad Russian, who is bad, since all about USSR is bad and evil. I can feel the same propaganda behind both movies.
But overally a good action picture Very Happy

Eagle Eye - no expectations about this one, so I was suprised to see how good this movie is in terms of action. If you've seen "Enemy of the state", you'll get the picture - surveillance system that sees and hears everything, but faaar more advanced and insightful, than the one in EOtS. It turns the action into completelly unbelievable situations, but... possible, and that is very scary. Watch this movie if you like conspiracy theories and a lot of action.

Saw 5 - A must-see for Saw fans. Heh, even if every part is all the same, it doesn't make me bored. Saw 5 summarises all previous parts into one picture and explains the puzzling motives of Jigsaw, or at least makes such impression. Good movie, with a lot of gore, blood and screaming, as always.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1132626/

The Midnight Meat Train - ohhh, gooood one. The story about the photographer, who, seeking for inspiration, faces the psycho killer, who smashes people traveling the metro in the late night. Or at least we think he is psycho... Smile Not for faint-hearted - quite a lot of gore, blood and screaming, decapitated bodies, cleaved out eye balls. I only wonder how the hell Mahogany is able to clean those wagons after he is done... Recommended for gore fans.

Edit: just updated the posters... seems that imdb isn't hot-linking friendly.

Martyrs (2008)

If you like disturbing movies then you might enjoy this one. Or, I'm not sure the word enjoy is right here. It's a story of two girls who are after people that tortured them when they were children. It's really violent but pretty well made nevertheless. I better not describe or spoil it more but if you like Hostel type of movies.. If I had to rate I wouldn't be sure if I gave it 1 or 5 stars.

Häxan (1922)

I saw this at a local film festival. A really old movie from the pre-sound era but soo ahead of its time. It's a wild dramatized documentary about witchcraft and witch hunts. The cool thing was that while the film was shown a band played music. Their ambient soundscapes created a very eerie atmosphere. Thanks to the music some of the scenes turned out to be scary.

If not counting Bergman's works, Häxan is the best Swedish film I've seen Cool

Now something completelly different...

You can watch it FOR FREE at http://www.youtube.com/homeproject (HD available).
Of course, there were couple of movies like this before, but none happened to be promoted so intensivelly, that you are given to watch it for free... well, IMO such movies should be played at every place possible, to reach as vast amount of people as possible, since it's not entertainment - it's a grim truth, yet reversible.

I'll check that one out, Krizz.

Have you guys seen "The Man from Earth"? It's an indie movie and a really unique one. Not everyone likes it because it's fully dialogue based but the story is so fascinating and captivating. One of the best movies I've seen recently.

Producer himself has said that he's only happy that people spread it on p2p networks. So you don't have to feel quilty Wink

PS. I also went to see the Star Trek movie and Terminator Salvation. Never been a big fan of Star Trek and the movie didn't do much for me but it was pretty lightweighted and not too much of that technological mumbojumbo which I think was a good decision. I liked Spock as well. The bad guy was a disaster though.

I thought the new Terminator movie was pretty nice. It is much much darker than the previous one. Those post apocalyptic ruins were awesome. Good sound design there too. Those deep tones from bigger terminators were impressive sounding in a theatre. I didn't care much for some characters though. That Robocop story felt old.

More action coming this summer. Really looking forward to the new Transformers movie. I thought the first one was awesome. Later in the summer G.I.Joe movie will hit the theaters and I'm afraid it's gonna ruin all my childhood memories..

I've seen that one. I agree that it's intriguing - the story the guy was telling absorbed me for the whole movie...

I just watched Knowing yesterday, and well... I was surprised. I was a little worried about this movie, even if the plot seemed to be promising, but Nicholas Cage as the protagonist wasn't, since his latest movies were dissapointing.
I don't want to reveal a plot, you can find it on imdb. The movie is well constructed, keeps the tension very well, on the other hand there are some irrational plot holes (as usual), and the story isn't a mastepiece, but overally the movie leaves a nice impression. I must say I really like the ending scenes.
It's very watchable and eventually I recommend it, if you like solid hollywood movies with absorbing mystery story and a bit of disaster scenes Smile
